The Birth of a Nation is a silent film directed and produced by D.W. Griffith and released in 1915. It was based off of the book The Clansmen by Thomas Dixon. It is known to be the first Hollywood "Blockbuster" and is known for its innovative technical achievements.
The film takes place before, during, and after the American Civil War. It portrays the Civil War and the Reconstruction and the changes it had on the South. It also portrays the creation of the Ku Klux Klan (http://www.stormfront.org/forum/showthread.php?t=420538). The film is controversial due to its interpretation of history. To historian Steven Mintz, the message of the movie is as follows: "Reconstruction was a disaster, blacks could never be integrated into white society as equals, and the violent actions of the Ku Klux Klan were justified to reestablish honest government. The film portrays the Ku Klux Klan as a group of people restoring order to the South's society that was endangered by abolitionists, freed Black slaves, and carpetbaggers."
